Home Run Derby 2012: Results, And What We Learned

MLBAM reserves the right to modify these Official Rules for clarification purposes without materially affecting the terms and conditions of the Contest. The eight MLB players participating in the Home Run Derby will be posted by MLBAM at after all participants have been confirmed. Your goal is to select the correct finish for each player of each round of the three rounds of the Home Run Derby. To do this, simply drag and drop the player's image to each selected spot displayed in an online form on

A fourth out, a fifth out, a sixth out, a seventh out, an eighth out ... Now Curtis Granderson calls time out -- evidently they have those in a Home Run Derby? -- for a conference on the mound with CC Sabathia and Jose Cano. And a ninth out, with the Kansas City crowd in all its glory. It's mostly cheers, but some are booing. Yankees' second baseman Robinson Canó was at the center of a controversy involving booing from the live Kauffman Stadium fans.

It is now one of the most-watched events broadcast on ESPN. Maybe, though, the risk is too great. How is MLB going to feel if a team, like the Dodgers, loses a star player for several months because he was trying to knock the cover off the ball to win the Home Run Derby? Is it worth it, really, if Kemp re-injures himself?

Each player was given 2 "innings" to hit as many home runs as possible before reaching 5 outs. For the derby, an out is defined as any swing that is not a home run. The winner of the contest was the player with the most total home runs in the two innings. By participating, each participant accepts and agrees to be bound by these Official Rules, the MLB.com Privacy Policy and Terms of Use, and by the decision of MLBAM which shall be final and binding in all respects. Each potential winner will be notified by e-mail and/or telephone (in MLBAM's discretion) and may (in MLBAM's discretion) be confirmed by postal mail, return receipt (the "Prize Notification"). Grand Prize Winner's guest will also be required to sign and return a Liability Release and, unless prohibited by law, Publicity Release prior to the issuance of Grand Prize.

Finally, mercifully, Kemp clears the center-field wall to get on the board. MasterCard would have donated $1,000,000 to Stand Up To Cancer if a player hits one of two designated banners. The banners remained up for the All-Star Game. However, it was not needed either of these years. The swing off reverted to one minute in 2019, the first year in which it was used.

David Ortiz of the Boston Red Sox won the event. Recorded only five of ten outs before hitting winning home run. Recorded only seven of ten outs before hitting winning home run.

The AL team captain, Canó, selected Yoenis Céspedes of the Oakland Athletics, Chris Davis of the Baltimore Orioles, and Prince Fielder of the Detroit Tigers. The NL team captain, Wright, selected Michael Cuddyer and Carlos González of the Colorado Rockies, and Bryce Harper of the Washington Nationals. González then withdrew due to a sprained finger and was replaced by Pedro Álvarez of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

In the 2007 event, fifteen golden balls were hit for a donation of $255,000, and ten ($170,000) were hit in the 2008 event. For 2009, State Farm added $5,000 for all non-Gold Ball homers, and $517,000 was collected. For 2010, the non-Gold Ball homer was reduced to $3,000 per home run and a total of $453,000 was collected. Since 2014 any homer hit off a T-Mobile Ball resulted in a $10,000 donation to charity by T-Mobile and MLB, to Team Rubicon. In the early years of the Home Run Derby, 4-10 players from both the AL and NL were selected to participate.

A "home run" in the context of the competition, consists of hitting a baseball in fair territory out of the playing field on the fly. It differs from a home run hit during legal gameplay in that the batter is not competing against a pitcher and a defensive team attempting to make an out. In the Home Run Derby, all pitches are purposefully thrown slowly and at a closer range than the official 60 feet 6 inches (18.44 m) distance, usually by a coach behind a pitching screen.

On July 11, 1988, the day before the Major League Baseball All-Star Game from Cincinnati, TBS televised the annual All-Star Gala from the Cincinnati Zoo. Larry King hosted the broadcast with Craig Sager and Pete Van Wieren handling interviews. The broadcast's big draw would have been the Home Run Derby, which TBS intended on taping during the afternoon, and later airing it in prime time during the Gala coverage. Unfortunately, the derby and a skills competition were canceled due to rain. For the first time in Derby history, Shohei Ohtani became both the first pitcher and the first Japanese player to participate in 2021.

This format was discontinued after the 2003 competition. All applicable federal, state, provincial and local laws and regulations apply. This Contest and these Official Rules will be governed by the laws of the State of New York.

Cargo would end with a mere four bombs, his best shot being 433 feet. The four-minute round length was made permanent in 2016, while the minute of bonus time was reduced to 30 seconds and required two home runs of at least 440 feet (134.1 m). Each batter is allowed one time-out during each round, and two in the finals.

This Contest may not be used for, or in connection with, any form of gambling. A perfect score would be eighty points if a participant correctly chooses the finish in all three rounds of the Home Run Derby. If a player drops out of the HR Derby prior to the start of the event, a replacement player will be named. As soon as the replacement player is named, he will also be inserted into the Contest, replacing the player that dropped out. Gonzalez, who finished the first half of the season with 17 homers, failed to advance after a four-homer opening round. Beltran opened up the Derby by hitting seven home runs and would advance to the second round, where he added five more.

The derby was first nationally televised by ESPN in 1993 on a same-day delayed basis, with the first live telecast in 1998. Although two hours are scheduled in programming listings for the telecast, it has rarely ever been contained to the timeslot and consistently runs three to four hours. Chris Berman has gained notoriety for his annual hosting duties on ESPN, including his catchphrase, "Back back back...Gone!".
